If you are
ever in Thunder Bay visiting or just passing through and need a quick
walleye fix, try the Current River. The river is located on
Cumberland Street downtown Thunder Bay. There is a parking lot near by.
SPRING:
The river is running very fast at this time as the Current River
dam gates are wide open to let the spring run off through. Try to fish
slower pockets and holes. I like to use a 1/2 ounce jig with a minnow or
a worm. Bounce the bait off of the bottom in front or behind the large
rocks that you can see. The hole at the base of the steep rapids is a
constant producer of nice walleye at this time. You can only fish one
side of the main river as the other side is private property. At the
mouth of the river there is a nice section of slack water....but it's on
the other side! Use a slip float here. The depth may vary depending on
the out flow of the dam upstream. Use a minnow, leech or a worm here.
Just to let you know that big pike, rainbow, brook and lake trout will
also be here so hang on tight!!
SUMMER:
Fishing methods are about the same as the spring time ones.
Floating raps also produce nice walleye at this time. Cast them into the
fast water and use a stop and go retrieve. Beware...the big pike are
still here!
FALL:
The walleye slow down a bit but the ones you will catch seem to
be a little larger. Methods to use remain the same. Caution...not only
are the big pike still here but the chinook salmon have moved in!!! Try
landing a 20 lb king on your standard walleye rigging!
WINTER:
My advice to you......You wouldn't catch me any where near this
place! It's a fast flowing river and the
ice is bad! DANGEROUS!!
