The Kidney Foundation of Canada, Northern Superior Chapter,
1111 Victoria Avenue
East- (807) 624-2680. The mission of The Kidney Foundation of Canada is: We are a national volunteer organization committed to reducing the burden of kidney disease through funding and stimulating innovative research; providing education and support to patients, promoting access to quality healthcare and increasing public awareness of kidney health and organ donation.
We do not receive government or United Way funding, each Chapter relies solely on the support of the community and businesses such as yours to provide its vital programming in their region. In the city of Thunder Bay and District, there are 1300 patients that are dealing with the realities of kidney disease and the numbers keep increasing by 13% each year. Over the past three years the number of clients in the north has increased dramatically. This patient population consists of all ages and people from all walks of life. There are many types and degrees of kidney disease, but the most devastating is renal failure, as survival for these people depends on dialysis or a kidney transplant. We know that there are 20 people waiting for an organ in this community alone, and we know that 39 have donated from Thunder Bay in the past. Today in Ontario, 1758 patients are on the transplant waiting list. One third of them are waiting for a kidney.
Services provided by the Kidney Foundation: ¨ Information and educational materials on kidney disease, treatment and prevention ¨ Short-term financial assistance for those in need ¨ Patient symposia and education days ¨ Peer support programs and self-help groups ¨ Bursaries for continued education for patients or patients children ¨ Subsidy for children to attend a local summer camp ¨ Travel loans ¨ Medical research ¨ Awareness of organ donation
