LAC DES MILLE LACS

HISTORICAL INFORMATION: Lac Des Mille Lacs is French and translates "Lake of a Thousand Lakes". Jacques de Noyon, founder of the first Trans-Canada Canoe Route to the West, Paddled across Lac Des Mille Lacs during the spring of 1688. A historical plaque at Argon commemorates this achievement. In the 1870's, a steamboat operated by G.A. McLaurin, fur trader and factor, towed logs and supplies across the lake to and from his sawmill at the Savanne River. Years later his steamboat sank just up river of the bridge on HWY 17 crossing the Savanne River. People are still losing lures on this sunken relic. FISH SPECIES PRESENT: Yellow Walleye, Northern Pike, Yellow Perch, Lake Whitefish, Cisco, Ling, White Sucker, Spottail Shiner, Ninespine Stickleback, trout-perch and Logperch. ACCESS: Lac Des Mille Lacs is located about 70 miles west and slightly north of Thunder Bay south of HWY 17. Access to the lake is via the Savanne River and by various gravel roads wich branch off south of HWY. 17 to tourist outfitters and public access points. Most of these roads are posted along HWY 17.
